HISTORY OF THE JEAN'S- The jean, a popular blue born in Nimes (France)

The origin of the names DENIM and JEAN

It is in 1736, that is to say nearly 130 years before its marketing towards the United States, which the first traces of the serges of Nimes appear.

Manufactured with wool of Anduze, Alès or Uzès, the serges have a reinforcement crossed in oblique which draws coasts towards the right-hand side or the left. This method of weaving is baptized denim. The first serge parts are then tinted in Nimes, color indigo. Clothing carried out will become working clotheses and thus will invade the area of the north of the Mediterranean. One day by chance, Levi Strauss turns to Gard to restock themselves with denim and to thus continue the chain of popular blue by extending it to the whole world.

La legend of the "Jean" started in full gold rush with a young Bavarian Jew, certain Levi Strauss, emigrant in the United States, in the State of California and become hawker in 1847. The conquerors of the West (of the gold diggers, then cow-boys) need solid trousers, and to meet these needs, it had the idea to develop working clotheses in fabric of the trousers jean. We are in 1853, the company Levi Strauss & Co is created. The first jeans were produced in a twill cotton fabric with armour whose wire of chain and screen were same color (brown). In 1860, the mark Levi' S adopts the denim definitively (American deformation of "Nimes"), twill of cotton made up of wire of different colour. Thus was born the "denim blue jean", in opposition to the original "Jean" who was apparently a rather popular English fabric.

At the end of the XIXe century, it is the expansion of the railroads. It is with the tower of company HD Lee to concentrate on the production of working clotheses. Then, rise came from the car and the jean became the uniform of the American workman. At the time of the stock exchange crash of 1929, million workmen and peasants are plunged suddenly in poverty. The jean of a solidity to any test became basic clothing.

But the great chance of the "Jean" (abbreviation of the American expression has even of jean) is the Second World war: the G.I. make discover in Europe these trousers little dirtying and infroissable. With the origin, the Jean was trousers with five pockets of indigo color. One finds now it declined in various colors according to the fashion and manufactured in thick fabrics. It will thus have been necessary to await the end of the Forties to see appearing the black jean of color and the first jean for woman.

the wire of chain of the denim are dyed in indigo blue. This is why of many washings are necessary so that a denim becomes diluted. This blue dyeing can be obtained thanks to the sheets of the indigotier. The indigo is difficult to obtain. In XVème century, the opening of the sea routes towards Asia supported the importation of the indigo. But it is only at the XIXème century that the Germans succeeded in synthesizing this color of predilection chemically. The perception of the blue color seems indeed common to many cultures.

There exist multiple treatments industrially to obtain the dyeing or the washing out of a Jean: the stone washed is a washing out which is carried out by using stones pounces which make it possible to gum the color of the Jean. The stone chimic or stone bleached associates the stone sandpapers with enzymes of bleaching. The Jean takes an aspect then "snows". The used designates a Jean aged by sanding. Lastly, the surteint is said of a blue Jean dyed in black.

the Jean symbolizes America: initially, it represents the hero of the conquest of the West, then the cow-boy. It joined then another American myth: that of the cinema. The young people seize some to be identified in the James Dean of the Fury of living. The Jean is then associated the Tee-shirt. The Jean will be exploited thereafter by all the social movements (feminism, movement hippie). Support of all imaginations - embroideries, cuttings, macadam bindings, etc. - it is regarded as unisexe, intergénérationnel and especially democratic, because its use spread with all the layers of the company.

Although it is sold today to more than one billion jean per annum all over the world, the sales knew a notable collapse since the years 1980. The stars "are sulky" the clothing which will have marked the XXème century. And it is finally the Jean "BASIC which is sold best and which remains impossible to circumvent
